Well, it was the perfect weather for an all-afternoon dart tournament – windy, rainy and cold. Much better to be inside with a bar and 22 like-minded people. We came to play darts and we came to win!
People started showing up just after noon and the final registrant showed up with one minute to spare. Teams were based on their personal dart stats and matched top plyer with bottom player, second player with the second from the bottom, and so on. Once the teams were matched, we drew names for a more random order of play.
Play began at 1pm, eleven teams chomping at the oche to get their darts in the board. Before we could begin, a trick-board was revealed. The board had been spun to the left and the 18 was at the top instead of the 20. Each team would play on this board twice in ten matches. Jolene hit a 132 in the first match played on the fun board, which would have been an 84 if the board wasn’t hanging funny.
After five rounds, we took a group break and had a fun Turkey shoot, where participants had to aim at a picture of a turkey with small dots spread over the picture. Each participating player got to shoot three darts at the board. Right off the hop, George Wallis hit a dot and got advanced to the second round. Sixteen others tried and only one managed to hit another dot and advance to the second round. Lorraine Paquette and George faced off in the second round, on another turkey picture with even less dots on the paper. Throwing one dart at a time, George and Lorraine battled over winning a turkey and first to hit a dot won. George was first in the first round and first in the second round too! Congratulations George!
As the tenth game ended, there was one clear winner – Lorraine Paquette and Don Enockson had 7 wins for first place. There was a four-way tie for 2nd and 3rd place, let the playoff begin! It was touch and go for all four teams, all playing well and getting near the goal around the same time. Larry MacDonald missed his chance at the double, as did Joe Fortune and Babes Coulter, then Larry’s partner, Zack Taylor pinned the double to win 2nd place. Sonja missed and then Ken Hayes hit the double, putting him and Babes in 3rd place.
As for Men’s and Ladies High Scores and High Outs, Sonja hit a whopping 152 in her first match of the night, putting the bar VERY high to beat her, no one did. High scores were flying threw the air, people hollering out as they hit them. Bedlam! Thom Ford hit a 133 and achieved the men’s high score. Lorraine Paquette pinned a 140 out, wow! Towards the end of the tournament, shouts and cheers could be heard from the board where Harry Van Heerwaarden had just hit a triple 19/double 10 finish for a 79 out. Unfortunately, there was a rumour that another player had doubled out a higher number, so Harry left and wasn’t there for the prize presentation, thankfully, Harry’s team mate John Coulter stepped in for the photo op.
The prizes were awarded and all the players gone by 4:30, which looked like it was midnight out there due to the winter solstice and the crap weather.
Thank you to all the players who came out to play, supporting the league and having a great time in the process. The Executive work hard for all these events, and this time it paid off! Hoping to have more successful events in the new year.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a happy new year! I hope Santa brings you lots of darts and/or paraphernalia.
